CH11 – Divergence, Sensory Drive & Speciation Flashcards
Selection/Evolution/Speciation
sexual selection, individuals with certain characteristics more likely to obtain mates. Males often show out to attract mates.
Elaboration and Innovation
over evolution, traits change in value along the same axis of variation. Innovation - this occurs when a new trait arises that is not down an already existing axis of variation ie. a new call type in mate choice
Assortative mating
individuals prefer mates tht have a similar phenotype or genotype for a given trait
Reproductive isolation
the inability of a species to breed successfully with related species due to geographical, behavioral, physiological, or genetic barriers or differences
Hybridization
the hybridization between two or more distinct lineages that contributes to the origin of a new species
Sensory Drive
characteristics from the environment lead to selection pressure resulting in changes in teh form of sensory systems and signals to be more effective under prevailing environmental conditions
