Ch10 Adapting to the Environment Flashcards
1
Q
Signal degradation
A
as a signal travels in the environment they are degraded ie. sound and vibration traveling from its source loses energy
2
Q
Sensory Plasticity
A
Individuals may invest more in senses that are of a greater value based on environmental conditions and less in senses that are less benefical
3
Q
Coping with Noise
A
Filter it out
•Time signaling to avoid noise (sing when environmental noise stops)
•Change signal to increase conspicuousness (alter frequency to avoid noise - bats)
•Increase redundancy to increase the likelihood of detection (sing more)
