CH106 Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a substituent?
A replacement for hydrogen.
What does it mean is a group is priority 1?
What does it mean if a group is priority 2?
The group has a higher atomic mass
The group has a lower atomic mass
What is the designation is the priority 1 groups are on the same side?
Z
What is the designation is the priority 1 groups are on different side?
E
What is constituental isomerisation?
This is where the molecular formula is the same but the connectivity is different.
What are stereoisomers?
Molecules with the same connectivity but different geometry.
What direction do dashes go?
Away from us
What direction do wedges go?
Towards us
What are enantiomers?
Pairs of molecules that are mirror images of each other. (inverted sterogenic centres)
They are non-superimposable
They have at least one stereogenic centre
What is a stereogenic centre?
This where all 4 substituents are different
What are diastereomers?
Pairs of molecules that are not mirror images and not superimposable
Some stereogenic centres are inverted
