Ch.10 Wind Energy Flashcards
Is wind energy a renewable source of energy?
Yes
What is wind energy?
Energy obtained from wind
What causes wind to blow?
Uneven heating of the earths surface, irregularities of the earths surface, and rotation of the earth.
- average wind speeds vary with geography and topography.
- higher in flat areas such as ocean or in plains than in hilly or mountain areas.
- jet stream at high altitudes has continuous wind speeds of over 100 mph.
- Equatorial regions heat up more than polar regions.
- Dry land heats up and cools off more quickly than bodies of water.
- low elevations hear up more than high elevations.
What are primary uses of wind energy?
Ventilation, sailing, pumping water, grinding grain and generating electricity.
What is a jib sail?
A sail in the front of the ship used to control the ships direction.
What is a wind machine or windmill?
A wheel like structure, mounted on a tower, with blades angled to catch the wind, causing it to spin.
What is a turbine?
A wind machine to generate electricity
Anemometer?
Measures wind speed
Blades?
Minimum of two blades up to 300 feet long.
Wind vane
Measures wind direction and transmits information to a yaw drive, which adjusts the orientation of the blades to the wind.
