Ch.1: The Science of Nutrition Flashcards
What are micronutrients?
Nutrients that we need to consume in relatively small quantities
What are macronutrients
Nutrients that we need to consume in relatively large quantities
What are phytochemical?
A substance found in plants and thought to benefit human health above and beyond the provision of essential nutrients and energy.
What are Zoonutrient?
A substance found in animal foods and thought to benefit human health above and beyond the provision of essential nutrients and energy.
What are functional foods?
A food that contains enhanced levels of an essential nutrient, photochemical, or zoo nutrient and thought to benefit human health
How is nutrition research conducted?
scientists test theories, in which most involve a series of steps collectively called the scientific method
What are the scientific methods
1.) Make an accurate observation
2.) Generate a research question; propose a hypothesis
3.) Test the hypothesis (Expirement)
4.) conclusion
5.) Result
What is a correlative Hypothesis
Two factors are related or associated with each other
What is a positive correlation
both variables change in the same direction
ex: As ice cream sales increase, so do the number of shark attacks
What is negative correlation
As one variable increases the other decreases
Ex: As the family income level increases, the risk of obesity decreases
What is causal Hypotheses
-A change in one factor causes a change in another factor
-Cause and effect relationship A→B
What is a lifestyle factor
Behavioral component of our lives over which we may or may not control
What is a environmental factor
An element or variable in our surroundings over which we may or may not have control
What is a genetic factor
An inherited element or variable in our lives that cannot be altered.
How do you calculate CHO
multiply by 4kcal/g
