Ch.1 Power Point Presentation Flashcards
Examples of Qualitative Observations?
-Color, Appearances, statements (Like SMALL or LARGE)
-Stating something HOT or COLD
-Specifying TEMPERATURE
-Identifying TEMPERATURE
-NO MEASUREMENTS or NUMBERS INVOLVED
Examples of Quantitative Observations?
-Quantity attribute is MEASURABLE
-NUMBERS expressed along w/ UNITS
-Dimension like MASS, TIME, DISTANCE, VOLUME, DENSITY, and TEMPERATURE
What is and ELEMENT?
Simplest type of matter; consist of only one type of atom, CANNOT b broken down into simpler types of matter by either PHYSICAL or CHEMICAL means.
How many elements on PERIODIC TABLE?
113
ATOM?
smallest individual unit of an element.
Chemical Compound?
Substances formed when two or more combined elements are combined in a defined form.
Molecule?
Collections of atoms held together by chemical bonds.
What are chemical compounds?
All chemical compounds are molecules but not all molecules are chemical compounds.
Pure substance?
Contains only one type of element or compound?
What are some qualities of PURE SUBSTANCES?
- Have FIXED CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS
-Have well DEFINED PHYSICAL/ CHEMICAL properties
What do physical properties not change ?
They do not change CHEMICAL COMPOSITION of material when they are measured.
Physical change?
change of physical property of substance.
Chemical properties?
Chemical change in properties
Is a mixture a pure substance?
No, they can be seperated.
Mixture?
substances of two or more ELEMENTS or COMPOUNDS that have not reacted CHEMICALLY.
