ch.1 part 2 Flashcards
What factors can influence normal development?
- Disabilities & Abuse
- culture
How do disabilities and abuse influence normal development
Children with mental disabilities or children with a background of physical or emotional abuse may be delayed in their development; therefore, they may move through these developmental periods at a slower pace than expected.
How does culture influence development?
The transition from adolescence to adulthood varies considerably from culture to culture.
- Among some peoples of the world for whom lengthy educational opportunities is not available and economic life is demanding, adolescence may be a relatively short period, beginning at puberty and ending shortly thereafter when the person assumes full adult responsibilities.
What is the definition of culture?
the set of beliefs, values, and traditions shared by a particular group of people.
chronological,
age-based
People are biological organisms which means
As such, all individuals inherit a set of unique genetic “instructions” that guides and shapes important aspects of how human development unfolds
Interaction definition
combination of forces (both biological and environmental that shape each person’s life.
The development of an individual is best seen as a dynamic interplay of
Biological potentials, social and environmental forces, and the individual’s own interpretation of and responses to these circumstances
Biological factors are
Genetic, neurological, or physical conditions that affect the development of an individual
Environmental factors definition
The specific situations that an individual experiences and that influence behavior and development
These two factors influence the course of development throughout the lifespan, often through complex interactions
Biological and environmental factors
. In general, it is not possible to categorize development as primarily biological or environmental; rather, it involves an ongoing,
interplay between these two basic sets of causes.
Example: every individual is born with a certain intellectual potential based on the specific nature of his or her central nervous system; that is, the biological makeup of a person’s brain establishes a range within which that individual’s intelligence will eventually fall.
perhaps a person was born with a certain personality tendency, such as shyness or extroversion. That person’s present personality, however, is also a function of the person’s lifelong interactions with other people, the sense of self that began to be acquired in infancy, the sociocultural context in which the person grew up, and much more. This is due to
Biological and environmental influences
Nature vs. Nurture
Nature= function of biology
Nurture= function of experience
