Ch1 Life Processes Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain
Chromosomes/genes
What do genes do
Controls the activity in the cell by determining which proteins the cell makes
What do enzymes do
Control chemical reactions in the cytoplasm
What is a substrate
A molecule which the enzyme is working on
What is the active site
Each enzyme has a small surface area which the substrate attaches to. when it touches it lowers the energy needed for the reaction to start. Allowing products to be formed more easily
What factors affect enzymes
- They work best at body temperature (37°C)
- Their optimum pH is seven (neutral)
What is diffusion
“Movement of molecules down a concentration gradient” - happens when a substrate is more concentrated in one place than another. If there is an equal concentration of molecules there is no net movement.
What is active transport
Against the concentration gradient cell uses energy from respiration to take up the particle
What is osmosis
Water moves across so membranes
Happens when the total concentrations of all dissolve substances inside and outside the cells are different
Water will move from the more dilutes solution to the more concentrated one
What are the eights life processes which are common to most living things
- Require nutrients
- Excrete
- Move
- Grow and develop
- Control
- Reproduce
- Response stimuli
- Respire
