Ch1 - Introduction to Information Systems Flashcards
What is a system?
A collection of elements that work together to achieve a purpose.
What is an information system?
A set of information processes to manage and manipulate data into information.
What is the purpose of a system?
The reason for its existence.
What is the environment of a system?
Everything that influences or is influenced by the system.
What are the 5 basic functions of hardware?
Input, Processing, Control, Storing, Output
What are the two types of software?
Application software, System software
What is data?
Raw facts
What is information?
Data that has been organised or processed in some way to give it meaning and value.
What is a Participant?
People involved in the operation of the system and essential to it’s functioning.
What is a User?
Someone who interacts with and benefits from the system.
What are the 7 Information Processes?
Collecting, Organising, Analysing, Storing and Retrieving, Processing, Transmitting and Receiving, Displaying
What are the four steps done in the “Collecting” process?
- Defining the required data
- Identifying the source of the data
- Determining how the data will be gathered
- Gathering the data
In the Collecting process there are two types of sources, Primary and Secondary. What is the difference?
Primary sources refer to data which is collected first hand.
Secondary sources refer to data that has been collected by someone else.
What is done in the “Organising” process?
Data is arranged, represented and formatted for use by other information processes.
What is done in the “Analysing” process?
Data is interpreted and transformed into information giving the data meaning.
