Ch.1 Flashcards
Diagram the chain of human resources in EMS systems
Patient > A citizen calls 911 > Emergency medical dispatcher > Emergency medical responders > EMTs > Emergency department staff >allied health staff
Describe the communications systems by which the public can access EMS
calling 911
Summarize the roles and responsibilities of EMTs
Provide basic-level medical and trauma care and transportation to a medical facility
Explain the different levels of EMS training
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- First at scene, activate the EMS system, provide immediate care for life-threatening injuries, control the scene, prepare arrival of ambulance
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Minimum level training for ambulance personnel
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
- Like and EMT but provide a bit more advanced care. Advanced care may include use of advanced airway devices and administer some fluids or medications via intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) routes
- paramedic
- Preforms all of the skills of the EMT and AEMT pls additional advanced-level assessment, decision-making, and skills.
Describe the tasks within the roles and responsibilities of an EMT
Personal Safety:
Keep yourself safe so that you can provide care to others
Safety of crew, patient and bystanders:
same dangers you face they will as well.
Working with other public safety professionals:
You will work closely with advanced EMS providers, firefighters, police officers, specialty rescue teams, and others
Patient assessment: Finding out enough about what is wrong with your patient to be able to provide appropriate emergency care. Assessment ALWAYS precedes emergency care
Patient care: may range from emotional support to life-saving CPR your patient assessment will help you understand where you land on the spectrum
Lifting and moving:
Define 911 system
a system for telephone access to report emergencies. dispatcher takes information and alerts EMS
Describe the connections between EMS history and EMS today
wounded soldiers would be taken off scene to be treated by doctors off site but were not treated on the battlefield.
Explain the traits of a good EMT that convey professionalism
- Good health and fit.
- Should be able to lift and carry up to 125 lbs
- Should have good eyesight
- Pleasant to inspire
- Sincere to convey understanding
- Cooperative to allow for faster and better care
- Resourceful to be able to adapt a tool or technique to fit an unusual situation
- a Self-Starter to show intuitive and accomplish what must be done without needing the help of someone else to start
- Emotionally Stable: To help overcome the unpleasant aspects of an emergency so that needed care can be carried out.
- Able to lead: take the steps necessary to control a scene, organize bystanders, deliver emergency care and take charge when necessary
- Neat and clean: promote confidence in both patients and bystanders, to reduce the possibility of contamination
- Good moral character and respectful of others
- in control of personal habits to reduce the possibility of rendering improper care and prevent patient discomfort. for example: not drinking prior to 8 hours before your shift
- Controlled in conversation and able to communicate properly.
- able to listen to others
- Nonjudgemental and fair
Explain the EMT’s role in quality improvement
.Continuing to learn to techniques and whats changed in the field as we learn more about modern medicine
continues self-review with the purpose of identifying aspects of the system that require improvement
ways to improve quality:
Carefully preparing written documentation
Becoming involved in the QI process
Obtaining feedback from patients and the hospital staff
Maintaining your equipment
Continuing your education
Explain the role of an EMS system physician Medical Director
.A physician who assumes the ultimate responsibility for medical direction or oversight of the patient-care aspects of the EMS system
Describe the connection between public health and EMS systems
public health overseas the health of a population and emts respond where cases go wrong. they also play a role in preventative care when talking to patients or being involved in certain programs
List ways that EMS systems can support public health
Injury prevention for geriatric patients
Injury prevention for youth
Public vaccination programs
Identify ways research impacts EMS
Helps improve overall patient outcomes, helps us understand what will help patients out in the long-term instead of just the short term
Explain the evidence-based process for EMTs
techniques that are supported by scientific evidence not just tradition
Explain how to evaluate medical research
Rely on the scientific method. Quality research can be replicated. High Quality research is peer reviewed
