Ch. VI - Anion tests Flashcards
To test for the presence of chloride ions.
Add silver nitrate. Clear to white precipitate. Add NH3. White precipitate disappears.
To test for the presence of sulfate and sulfite ions.
Add BaCl2. Clear to white precipitate. Add HCl. Cloudy precipitate remains in sulfate (BaSO4). Cloudy precipitate disappears in sulfite (BaSO3).
To test for the presence of carbonate and hydrogen carbonate ions.
Add HCl. Effervescence is produced. Add MgSO4. Cloudy precipitate forms in carbonate. Cloudy precipitate doesn’t form in hydrogen carbonate.
To test for the presence of nitrate (NO3-) ions.
Add iron(II) sulfate. Slowly add H2SO4 using a dropper. A brown ring is formed.
To test for the presence of phosphate ions.
Add ammonium molybdate. Slowly add nitric acid(HNO3) using a dropper. Place in a warm water bath. A yellow precipitate is formed.
