Ch 9: Temporal Organization in Auditory Perception and Music Flashcards
InterOnset Interval (IOI)
length of time between the onsets of two events
Limits of sequence perception
• Sounds separated by more than 1.5 – 1.8 s are perceived as isolated (e.g. slowly dripping tap)
▫ Upper limit of sequence perception
• Sounds separated by less than 100 ms are perceived as a single,
continuous event (e.g. jackhammer)
▫ Lower limit of sequence perception
• Sounds separated by less than 25 ms are perceived as
asynchronous but unordered
• Sounds separated by less than 2 ms are perceived as simultaneous
• Between 25 ms and 100 ms IOI, order detection is possible in some circumstances but generally unreliable
Duration
psychological correlate of a span of time
Rhythm
pattern of relations among onsets, durations, and
accents of sound events
Beat/pulse/tactus
perceived pulsation delimiting equal-duration
intervals, often expressed in inter-onset interval (IOI)
Tempo
rate at which beats occur, often expressed in units of
beats per minute (BPM) or metronome marking (MM)
Meter
grouping of beats into repeating patterns of accented and unaccented (strong or weak) beats
