Ch # 9: Musculosketal Drugs Flashcards
These r used 2 treat diseases of the muscles
Ex. Osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle spasms and fibromyalgia
Musculoskeletal Drugs
A type of degenerative joint disease
Causes degeneration of the cartilage pad and erosion of the bone ends inside a joint
Effects weight bearing joints(hips, knees, lower back) and high frequency used joints(fingers, toes)
Drugs used 4 treatment reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins
Drug Categories: -acetaminophen drugs
- salicylate drugs - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - COX-2 inhibitor drugs - corticosteroid drugs
Osteoarthritis
A drug category used 2 treat OA
Analgesic drug used 4 pain but it does NOT inhibit the production of prostaglandins so it can’t treat inflammation
Relieves mild-2-moderate pain and does not cause stomach irritation
Drug ex. Tylenol
Acetaminophen
A drug category used 2 treat OA and minor conditions of bones
Oldest and most well know drug known 2 man
An analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug
Salicylate drugs
A drug category used 2 treat OA
Inhibits the production of prostaglandins 2 produce both an analgestic and an anti-inflammatory effect.
Used 2 treat OA and RA
Drug ex. diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren) fenoprofen (Nalfon) ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) indomethacin (Indocin) ketoprofen meloxicam (Mobic) naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) oxaprozin (Daypro) piroxicam (Feldene) sulindac (Clinoril)
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
NSAID’s
A drug category used 2 treat OA
Selectively inhibit an enzyme that normally plays a role in the production of prostaglandins that cause the pain and inflammation of OA, dysmenorrhea and colon polyps
Drug ex. celecoxib (Celebrex)
COX-2 Inhibitor Drugs
cyclooxygenase-2
A drug category used 2 treat OA
Has a strong anti-inflammatory effect on the synovial membrane lining inside of the joint. Also used 2 treat bursitis and tendonitis
Due 2 side effects, it is only used 2 treat acute symptoms 4 a short time. U get 1 large dosage then it decreases every day until your done.
Drug ex. - betamethasone (Celestone) *Endings of -lone and
- dexamethazone -sone - hydrocortiszone ((Cortef, Solu-Cortef) - methylprednisolone (Medrol, Solu-Medrol)
Corticosteroid Drugs
Produces symptoms of pain, inflammation, swelling, joint deformity, and loss of joint function.
It is caused by an autoimmune response in which the bodies own immune system targets and destroys cartilage, connective tissue and joints.
Treated w/OA drugs and if needed, these can be added.
Drug categories: - OA drugs
- gold compound drugs - monoclonal antibody drugs - Janus kinase inhibitor drugs - immunosuppressant drugs
Rheumatoid Arthritis Drugs
A type of RA drug
29%-50% of the drug is pure gold. These drugs inhibit macrophages in the immune system from attacking joints
Drug ex. auranofin (Ridaura) *contains “au”
gold sodium thiomalate (Aurolate)
Gold Compound Drugs
A type of RA drug
Prevents lymphocytes from making antibodies against joint tissues and they inhibit tumor necrosis factor which causes inflammation
Drug ex. - adalimumab (Humira)
- certolizumab (Cimzia) - golimbumab (Simponi) - infliximab (Remicade) - rituximab (Rituzan) - tocilizumab (Actemra)
Monocolnal Antibody Drugs
This type of disease occurs when the homeostasis between osteoblasts bone deposits and osteoclasts breakdown and resorption of bone becomes unbalenced
A type of drug that decreases the rate of bone resorption, supplemental estradiol and progesterone, supplemental calcium and vitamin D and by increasing weight bearing excerise to stimulate bone growth
Drug categories: - bone resorption inhibitor drugs
- selective estrogen receptor modulator drugs - estrogen drugs - calcium drugs
Osteoporosis
2 names 4 a type of osteoporosis drug
It inhibits osteoclasts which decreases the rate at which bone is resorbed
Drug ex. -alendronate (Fosamax) *Endings of -dronate and
- ibandronate (Boniva) -dronic - risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia) - zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa)
Bone Resorption Inhibitor Drugs
Bisphosphonate Drugs
A type of osteoporosis drug
These drugs bind to estradiol receptors on cells and stimulate the receptors in the same way estradiol does
Drug ex. raloxifene (Evista)
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator Drugs
A type of osteoporosis drug
A hormone replacement drug used 2 treat the symptoms of menopause.
Some of these drugs can b used 2 prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
Drug ex. - conjugated estrogens (Premarin)
- estradiol (Climara, Estraderm, Vivelle) - estropippate (Ogen)
Estrogen Drugs
A type of osteoporosis drug
An OTC supplement drug
Drug ex. - Caltrate
- Chooz - Os-Cal - Tums
Calcium Drugs
