What is Post-Modernism?
- Destruction of the text
- Abandonment of the narrative or linear structure
- Unfamiliar, cross-gender, multicultural casting
What does the Director do?
Handles artistic aspects (interpretation of script, designers, performers), integrating all theatrical elements into a finished production
Open Call
Auditions that allows anyone who wants to audition to do so. The auditioner has 2 minutes to give a monoloque, ‘becoming’ that character
Rehearsal
Typically 2-4 days a week, incorporation of costumes and makeup
Table Read
Cast reads the script, maybe for 1st time, and analyzes the script
Off Book
Lines should be memorized, able to read with a group, focusing on tone and mood
Blocking
Director decides when/where performers move and position
Eye of Audience
Director sits in the seats during rehearsal so that they can see what the audience will see opening night. Allows director to adjust if needed
Tech Week
Elements other than acting to see how everything works together
Dry Tech: organizes lights, scenery, sound
Wet Tech: Organizes actors
Producer
- Responsible for the financial and managerial tasks, making available to public
- Influences artistic decisions
- Could also be an actor
Broadway Producer
Organizations that raise the capital, and receive a large part of the profit. They are also investors
- Negotiate all contracts, rent space, lease space, arrange publicity, administer payroll, and keep all financial records
Community Theatre
Volunteers carry out many of the duties
- Non Profit, an avocation
- Very few roles
