Q

High pressure and 3rd stage engines have the following specialized equipment

A
  • 3” high pressure hose 50 foot lengths
  • High pressure fittings
  • High pressure outlets
  • Tether straps with gated hooks. This strap contains Velcro bands that allow the strap to be attached to the high pressure supply hose either before or after the hose is attached. It is recommended that units pre-attach the tether strap to the high pressure supply hose and store together as a unit.

Q

High pressure pumping is defined as operating at discharge pressures over

A

250 psi

The IC shall be notified when high pressure pumping is necessary

6
Q

All engines including conventional engines are capable of providing pressures over 250 psi however

A

Unless emergency conditions exist and they are ordered to do so by the IC, conventional engines should NOT operate in pressures exceeding 250 psi

Q

When high pressure pumping operations are in use (over 250 psi) the following precautions are to be followed

A

Must use high pressure hose and fittings (painted white & heavier)
Must use tether strap
Whenever possible one length from Siamese
No more than 2 lengths from Siamese
Prior to pumping need a safety zone on each side of engine
Tape, rope or stanchions used to designate safety zone
Safety zone of at least 50 feet in all directions around pumper
If 2 lengths are needed safety zone may need to be expanded
All unused gates & outlets must be closed and capped

Q

Each engine operating at high pressures must be controlled by the ECC and assisted by an

A

ECC from a NON-Pumping engine. One ECC shall operate the pump and one ECC shall monitor radio communications. Other ECC’s of NON-Pumping engines shall assist in keeping persons out of the safety zone

Q

Supply lines must be secures using the tether strap. The tether strap must be secured to

A

Both the engine and the building fire department connection. When more than one length of hose is required each length MUST be tethered and secured to each other by the tether gate hook.

Stairwells served by standpipes must

A

NOT be used as staging or rest areas during high pressure pumping operations. Use a minimum amount of operating personnel in these stairways

Q

Preset pressures on apparatus equipped with pressure governors should

A

NOT be used when charging a standpipe system. Once the supply line is charged pressures are to be increased slowly to avoid damage to building piping

15
Q

When more than one engine supplies the standpipe system, ECC’s shall coordinate to ensure that they

A

Operate at the same discharge pressures

16
Q

The standpipe system should be supplied by 2 engines. This will require more than one high pressure or 3rd stage engine to be assigned or special called to the incident if pressures higher than 250 psi are required. When only one building Siamese connection is available, stretch the 2nd supply line to the

A

1st floor outlet

DO NOT connect two high pressure supply lines to a single building Siamese

17
Q

Pressures exceeding 600 psi will require a

A

3rd stage engine. When 3rd stage pumping is implemented the IC shall ensure an additional 3rd stage engine is assigned to the incident. ECC’s intending to pump using the 3rd stage MUST notify and get approval from the IC

18
Q

Who can order the use of a 3rd stage pumper

A

Only a BC or higher rank can order the use of a 3rd stage

19
Q

As compared to 2 stage engines the 3 stage engines with the 3rd stage engaged can pump

A

Higher volumes at pressures over 500 psi and will do so at lower pump rpm’s. The increased efficiency makes the 3rd stage engines the preferred choice for pumping operations requiring discharge pressures over 500 psi

20
Q

Preset pressures on apparatus equipped with pressure governors

A

SHOULD NOT BE USED when charging a standpipe system

21
Q

When other than 1st due to a fire in a high rise building, officers of high pressure engines AND 3rd stage engines shall direct their ECC’s to position the apparatus at a

A

Hydrant in proximity to the Siamese

22
Q

DO NOT connect _____ high pressure lines to a single building siamese. When only one Siamese is available stretch the 2nd supply line to the __________

A

2

1st floor outlet

23
Q

In regards to 3rd stage pumping pressures exceeding _____ psi will require a 3rd stage

A

600 psi

24
Q

When 3rd stage pumping is implemented the IC shall ensure an

A

Additional 3rd stage engine is assigned to the incident

25
Q

Only an IC at the rank of ______ or higher may order the use of the 3rd stage

A

BC or higher

26
Q

The increased efficiency of a 3rd stage engine makes it the preferred choice for pumping operations requiring discharge pressures over ______ psi

A

500 psi

27
Q

Assuming 2 lengths of 3 1/2 hose between the pumper and the Siamese, 3 lengths of 2 1/2 hose attached to the standpipe outlet with 1 1/8 MST, the pump discharge pressure for each hose line attached to a standpipe system should be _____ psi plus ____ psi for each floor above grade

A

100 psi

5 psi
