CH 9 ADD 1 HIGH PRESURE PUMPING Flashcards
High pressure engines are
Two stage 1000 gpm or 2000 gpm engines retro-fitted with a high pressure discharge elbow and have been issued specialized high pressure equipment to pump at discharge pressures over 250 psi and up to 600 psi
Conventional engine companies are
Two stage 1000 gpm or 2000 gpm engines
3rd stage engines
An engine with a 3rd stage. This 3rd stage can supply a maximum of 500 gpm up to 700 psi
High pressure and 3rd stage engines have the following specialized equipment
- 3” high pressure hose 50 foot lengths
- High pressure fittings
- High pressure outlets
- Tether straps with gated hooks. This strap contains Velcro bands that allow the strap to be attached to the high pressure supply hose either before or after the hose is attached. It is recommended that units pre-attach the tether strap to the high pressure supply hose and store together as a unit.
Concerning the high pressure outlets there is _____high pressure outlet on a high pressure engine and there are ____ high pressure outlets on 3rd stage engines

High pressure pumping is defined as operating at discharge pressures over
250 psi
The IC shall be notified when high pressure pumping is necessary
All engines including conventional engines are capable of providing pressures over 250 psi however
Unless emergency conditions exist and they are ordered to do so by the IC, conventional engines should NOT operate in pressures exceeding 250 psi
When high pressure pumping operations are in use (over 250 psi) the following precautions are to be followed
Must use high pressure hose and fittings (painted white & heavier)
Must use tether strap
Whenever possible one length from Siamese
No more than 2 lengths from Siamese
Prior to pumping need a safety zone on each side of engine
Tape, rope or stanchions used to designate safety zone
Safety zone of at least 50 feet in all directions around pumper
If 2 lengths are needed safety zone may need to be expanded
All unused gates & outlets must be closed and capped
Each engine operating at high pressures must be controlled by the ECC and assisted by an
ECC from a NON-Pumping engine. One ECC shall operate the pump and one ECC shall monitor radio communications. Other ECC’s of NON-Pumping engines shall assist in keeping persons out of the safety zone
Supply lines must be secures using the tether strap. The tether strap must be secured to
Both the engine and the building fire department connection. When more than one length of hose is required each length MUST be tethered and secured to each other by the tether gate hook.
When ordered to pump in high pressures engines WITHOUT tethering straps should secure the supply line to the building Siamese connection and apparatus using a
Utility Rope
A Battalion Chief should be designated as the ______
to control this operation. The operation MAY be implemented pending their arrival
High Pressure Pumping Group Supervisor
The IC should ensure building occupants avoid
Stairwells containing standpipes when possible. Public address and building communication systems should be used if needed
Stairwells served by standpipes must
NOT be used as staging or rest areas during high pressure pumping operations. Use a minimum amount of operating personnel in these stairways
Preset pressures on apparatus equipped with pressure governors should
NOT be used when charging a standpipe system. Once the supply line is charged pressures are to be increased slowly to avoid damage to building piping
