CH 12 WATER LOSS PROCEDURES Flashcards
Kinks constitute a water loss when they are
Severe enough to reduce the extinguishment capabilities of a hose line. When this occurs and is recognized by any member an Urgent message shall be transmitted via the HT. It is essential that the IC, units operating on the fire floor and the floors above be notified of a water loss situation
When a water loss occurs the engine officer shall ensure
That the fire is confined by closing a door and/or all members are moved to a safe area of refuge if necessary
The easiest water loss problem to correct is
Kinks
Do not correct kinks by
Increasing hose pressures
Who must initiate the action to correct a kink
Engine officer and the 2nd due engine should also address this (water resource unit)
When the problem of a kink is corrected who must the engine officer notify
IC
All units on fire floor and floors above
Indication of a burst length
Engine officer reports little or no water
ECC sees adequate pressure reading
Increased flows showing on flow meter
RPM’s increasing
Any water loss problems need an
Urgent transmitted
All engine companies are required to store an
Extra 1 3/4 hose with a controlling nozzle attached on the apparatus in an easily accessible location. This hose or the 2 1/2 hose folds on the apparatus for stand pipe operations can be used to replace a burst length or added to a short stretch as necessary.
Who dispatches the member to get the replacement hose
Engine officer
There are 2 ways to correct a burst length
1) If enough hose is available remove the burst length and re-attach the existing couplings
2) Replace the burst length with a new length of hose
When is water shut down required at the pumper
When adding a hose to the back of the stretch. Unless it is a standpipe operation then shut it down at the outlet
When adding a hose line to the front of the stretch who now has to ensure that the original nozzle which now is acting like a gate valve does not accidentally get shut down
Engine officer
What do you need when adding a 2 1/2 hose to a short stretch
1 1/2 x 2 1/2 increaser
Where is the increaser fitting carried
Standpipe kit
