Ch 9 Flashcards
Pathogens living organisms
bacteria
fungi
parasites
Pathogens nonliving infectious:
viruses
prions
Bacteria is usually treated with ____
Antibiotics
-Much smaller than bacteria
-Unable to reproduce outside of a host cell
-Contains DNA or RNA ( Not both)
Viruses
Diseases caused by viruses:
Aids, hepatitis, rabies, common cold, chicken pox
Factors for Human Health Risks from Pathogens
-Transmissibility: How readily its passed from person to person
(high transmissibility = spreads readily)
-Mode of transmission:
how it is passed to people (Ex: body fluids)
-Virulence:
how much damage is caused by the infection; (highly virulent = serious illness)
Lymphatic system functions include:
filtering foreign material through lymph nodes to defend against infection
largest lymphatic organ
Spleen
What are the 2 regions in the Spleen?
Red pulp: Removes old and damaged red blood cells
White Pulp: has lymphocytes searching and destroying pathogens
Located behind Sternum, above heard
Thymus Gland
Filters pathogens from food and air entering the throat
Tonsils
Filter pathogens from air; found in back of nasal passages
Adenoids
Physical or chemical barriers that block entry (First line of defense)
-Skin
-Tears and saliva
-Mucus
-Stomach
Nonspecific defenses (2nd line of defense)
-Phagocytosis: white blood cells surrounding invading bacteria
-Inflammation: Pain, heat, swelling, redness.
-Fever Response: causes bacterial reproduction
Characteristics of Immune response (3rd line of defense)
-recognizes and targets specific pathogens and foreign substances
-has memory
-remembers initial exposure
