Social Psychology
How other people influence an individual’s behavior.
Social Influence
A change in behavior and/or belief to conform to a group norm as a result of group pressure.
Conformity
An effect stemming from our desire to gain approval and to avoid the disapproval of others.
Normative Social Influence
Acting in accordance to a direct request from another person or group.
Compliance
Following the commands of a person in authority.
Obedience
A process in which the person performing the research influences the results in order to obtain a certain outcome.
Experimenter Bias
The probability of an individual helping in an emergency is greater when there is only one bystander than when there are many bystanders.
The Bystander Effect
The loss of self-awareness and self-restraint in a group situation that fosters arousal and anonymity.
Deindividuation
The strengthening of a group’s prevailing opinion about a topic following group discussion of the topic.
Group Polarization
Impairs decision making; the desire for group harmony overrides a realistic appraisal of the possible decisions.
Group Think
The process by which we explain our own behavior and the behavior of others.
Attribution
The tendency as an observer to overestimate internal dispositional influences and underestimate external situational influences on others’ behavior.
Fundamental Attribution Error
The assumption that the world is just and that people get what they deserve.
Just-world Hypothesis
Early information is weighted more heavily than later information in forming an impression of another person.
