Ch 8: Properties Of Matter Flashcards
the amount of matter in an object
Mass
something that you can observe with your senses
Property
are solids, liquids and gases
The 3 states of matter
- matter that has its own size and shape
- it takes up space and has mass
Solid
- matter that does not have its own shape
- it takes the shape of their container
Liquid
- matter that does not have its own shape or size
- takes the size and shape of its container
- always takes up all of the space in its container
- can change size and shape, and has mass
Gas
- something made up of two or more kinds of matter
- does not change when put together
- can be separated to see its parts
- ex. a fruit salad
Mixture
What are the properties of matter?
- mass
- how something feels
- color
- shape
- size
How can you change matter without changing its state?
Breaking it into pieces or folding it changes its shape.
How do you separate a mixture?
By dividing the different things that are mixed together like letting sand in water sink, or evaporating water that was mixed with salt.
What does cooling and heating do to matter?
- Heat can change solids to liquids. Ex. Ice/snow melting when the air is warm or butter melting when it’s heated.
- Heat can change liquids to gases. Ex. Heat from sunlight evaporates water or boiling water creates water vapor (gas).
- Freezing (liquid) water turns it into a solid.
Anything that takes up space and has mass is called…
Matter
The amount of space a liquid takes up is called…
Volume
4 examples of changing the size and shape of matter
- molding clay
- folding paper
- tearing/cutting paper
- bending a pipe cleaner
2 ways to separate a mixture
- letting the matter sink (Ex. water & sand)
- letting the water evaporate (Ex. water & salt)
