Ch 8-Gauging and calculations (c) Flashcards
What are the three types of gauging equipment?
Open, restricted and closed
What does UTI stand for?
Ullage Temperature Interface
What is restricted gauging equipment?
A portable electronic device, comprises of a calibrated tape terminating in a probe. The device is attached to a vapour lock on the tank
How does restricted gauging equipment work?
When the probe contacts the cargo, a tone is generated and the level can be read on the tape
Why is a restricted gauging device termed this way?
Because when the vapour lock is opened to allow the tape into the tank, a small quantity of the tank atmosphere is released through the device
What is open gauging equipment?
A calibrated sounding tape with a brass ‘bob’ on the end
How does open gauging system equipment work?
The tape is lowered through the tank ullage port. This involves exposing the tank contents to the open atmosphere and hence personnel may be affected
When are open gauging systems not used?
If the ship is inerted or contains particularly toxic cargoes
Why are closed gauging equipment named this way?
Because when in use, there is no release of the tank atmosphere to the deck
When are closed gauging systems required?
For ships operating with inert gas
What is sounding?
Measured from the bottom of the tank to the top of the liquid
What is ullage?
From the gauging point to the top of the liquid
What is on an ullage report?
- Tank number
- Observed ullage (m)
- Corrected ullage (m)
- Temperature (degrees C)
- Observed volume (m3)
- Density at observed temp
- Weight (MT)
For what reason does the vessel calculate the quantity loaded?
As a cross-check on the bill of lading
When measuring the cargo quantity, what must be measured (4)?
Liquid level in the tank
Liquid temperature
Trim
Water
