Name potential sources of ignition (8)
- Direct heat (smoking or hot work)
- Electrical
- Mechanical
- Comms equipment
- Anodes
- Spontaneous combustion
- Static
- Ship shore bonding
What is hot work?
Work involving sources of ignition or temperatures sufficiently high to cause ignition of a flammable gas or mixture.
What electrical equipment might be found on deck (7)?
- Switches
- Lamps

Where are hazardous/dangerous areas generally found?
On the open deck of a tanker
What are the three types of hazardous zones?
Zone 0, zone 1 and zone 2
Which is the most hazardous zone?
Zone 0
Describe zone 0
Explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods
Describe zone 1
Explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation
Describe zone 2
Explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation, but if it does, it is not frequent and will only last a short time
Is a hot work permit needed for grit blasters/needle guns?
Yes. It is not hot work, however it will produce sparks
Is vapour allowed to be released from grit blasters/needle guns?
No
Is a hot work permit required for hand tools?
No
When can hand tools not be used?
On deck areas or fittings connected to the cargo system
Can scanner motors be used in hazardous areas?
No, they are not rated for use
What reactions can anodes create?
Thermite reactions
