How long have people been using drugs?
- “The plant of Joy” (opium) was used in Mesopotamia 4,000 yrs ago.
- Religious rituals in Egypt used opium 3,500 yrs ago.
- Incas used cocaine 5,000 yrs ago.

What is the history of drug use for youth in the United States?
Opium was widely used in products (US) in the 1800’s!
- During the civil war, morphine was given at such high rates that men developed “soldier’s disease” - aka…withdraw.
Ex: Bayer company (1898) developed heroin as a pain killer.
- Coca-Cola had cocaine as an ingredient up until 1903.
Used as Patent Medicine - cure all’s (usually containing/all drugs/alcohols)*
Is drug use increasing, decreasing, or stable?

What are the most common drugs used in the United States?
alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, cigarettes?
Are males or females more likely to use drugs?

What do we know about race/ethnicity and drug use?
- white youth rate - 73% (drug use)
- black youth rate - 26% (drug use)
- white youth rate - 90% (alcohols)
- white youth 36% admittance
- black youth 12% admittance
Do drugs cause crime? What does it mean that there is a co-occurrence?
- not clear; depends on drug, circumstance, etc.
- drug use = crime?
- crime = drug use?
Most youth who use drugs don’t go and commit a crime
- most youth committing crimes do so for other reasons than drugs.
Youth who use drugs are more likely to get into trouble
- may not cause crime; but it is a co-occurrence
