What is the history of drug use for youth in the United States?

A

Opium was widely used in products (US) in the 1800’s!

  • During the civil war, morphine was given at such high rates that men developed “soldier’s disease” - aka…withdraw.

Ex: Bayer company (1898) developed heroin as a pain killer.

  • Coca-Cola had cocaine as an ingredient up until 1903.

Used as Patent Medicine - cure all’s (usually containing/all drugs/alcohols)*
