What does it mean that some businesses do questionable things, which are not illegal?
Play on words, hidden subliminals, etc.
What is the financial strain thesis?
Corporations in depressed industries and those that do not perform well are more likely to violate the law.
(made all the money they can make)
Why did we talk about Total cereal and Chobani yogurt?
Chobani yogurt got sued in 2012 for fraud in label with “no sugar” but had evaporated cane juice (which IS SUGAR)
- lawsuit thrown out in 2014.
Food labeling is confusing - they took advantage of that.
What is a social media influencer?
A person with a large social media following - usually involved in paid promotions.
Why is advertising in social media a problem and in some circumstances illegal?
Ex:
- Kardashians and Popeyes
- Lord and Taylor Brand (2015) paid people to promote clothing line
(Neither one of these cases disclosed that it was a sponsor/paid promotion) this is messy (and illegal:))
What is state-corporate crime?
Illegal or harmful acts where a corporation and the government work together. Often business favors or politicians taking money for favors.
What happened at Amazon, Apple, and the U.S. government?
Amazon bought large # of servers for their web services. 2015 - found something on their servers (computer chip about the size of a rice grain and have been found on several servers and cell phones) stated that this chip was watching. Allowed hackers to view data saved/used on computer/cell phone. (same servers found in Apple, DoD, CIA, Navy warships, etc.) from China who was working with the manufacturer.
How can we deter white-collar crime?
accountability and lessen abuse of power? (find answer)
