What is conception?
fusion of women’s eggs with the man’s sperm
Journey of the egg in a woman’s body
ovary fallopian tube uterus implants in uterus (fertilized) or disintegrates & dispels (unfertilized) This process happens every 28 days.
How long does the egg’s journey take?
3-4 days
Journey of sperm cells from ejaculation to conception

How does a sperm cell penetrate an egg?
The enzymes on sperms head soften the eggs outer layer until 1 gets in.
3 possible reasons for infertility in women:
1-tubal blockage, could be PLD, untreated gonorrhea
2-failure to ovulate, 40% of infertility is caused by this, failure to release egg
3-other reasons ex. smoking
Failure to ovulate
over age 30
you ovulate less frequently
2 possible reasons for infertility in men
1-low sperm count, causes for this are smoking, pollution, radiation, heat
2-block passages between testis & urethra
Why are the testis outside the men’s body?
Sperm form a few degrees below average body heat
2 treatments for infertility
1-surgery…go unblock the passage
2-fertility drugs
5 early signs & symptoms of pregnancy
1-missed mensal period 2-nausea ("morning sickness") has to do with hormone change 3-fetigue, major changes in body 4-emotional upset 5-tender breasts
6 important components of good prenatal care
1-regular medical check ups
2-nutritious diet…they are building a new body so they need to eat right
3-exercise…exception of skydiving, horseback riding etc.
4-avoid drugs, alcohol, smoking, all caffeine
5-adequeate rest
6-childbirth classes
3 stages of labor
1-contractions
2-delivery, baby is slowly pushed out…takes about a minute
3-placenta is spelled out
post partum period
- from time of delivery to 3 months
- body & hormones changing back
- baby blues (mild depression) 50%-80% new moms experience this
post partum depression
severe depression
10% of new moms get this
mom doesn’t take care of the baby
