romantic attraction
the experience of finding someone desirable as a potential intimate partner, w/ or w/out sexual element
matching phenomenon
tendency for people who are dating or about to get married to be rated as similar to each other in physical appearance
vertical attribute
quality on which people can be ranked hierarchically
horizontal attribute
a quality on which people can differ without being judged better or worse than anyone else
complementarity
intimate partners having opposing qualities that the other partner lacks
unrequited love
love that is not returned

stalking
unwanted and disturbing attention from someone wishing to start or continue a romantic relationship
speed dating
a group gathers in a room and over an evening, each participant talks one-on-one with every other potential romantic partner for a few minutes
*second dates usually can not be predicted by reported preferences, only physical attractiveness
misattribution of arousal
humans make mistakes about source of our own excitement, e.g. rollercoaster date
mate selection
the process thru which a committed relationship is formed
proceptivity
anticipatory behaviors taken as a signal for someone to make a move, e.g. “giving the eyes” to someone in a bar so they walk over
behavioral synchrony
as two people become more interested in each other during a conversation, they unconsciously begin to mimic each other’s movements
social penetration theory
the development of a relationship is associated with the kind of personal info partners exchange w/each other
categorizes self-disclosure on 2 dimensions:
- breadth: variety of info shared
- depth: personal significance of the info shared
disclosure reciprocity
when one person share something personal, the other immediately shares something equally personal
