Ch 7 Equilibrium Flashcards
1
Q
Dynamic Equilibrium: definition
A
a state where in a closed system, the concentrations of all the reactants and products is constant
2
Q
Dynamic equilibrium: explanation (5)
A
- most chemical reactions do not go to completion
- instead, a reverse reaction will take place with the formed products to reform the reactants
- in a closed system, the concentrations of all the reactants of products will eventually become constant
- forward and reverse reactions continue to occur
- at equilibrium, the rates of the forward reaction and the reverse reaction are the same
3
Q
Dynamic equilibrium occurs with physical changes (4)
A
- e.g. in a closed flask containing some water, equilibrium reached between liquid water and water vapour
- faster moving molecules in the liquid evaporate from the surface to become vapour
- slower moving molecules in the vapour condense to form liquid
- equilibrium established when the rate of vaporization equals the rate of condensation
4
Q
Closed system (2)
A
- is one which neither matter nor energy can be lost or gained from the system i.e. the macroscopic properties remain constant
- equilibrium would never be reached with an open system as the products could escape
