Ch 1 Stoichiometric Relationships Flashcards
Compound
A substance that contains more than one element combined chemically in a fixed ratio. They have different chemical and physical properties from their component elements.
Mixture
Combination of elements or compounds that are not chemically bonded together. The components of a mixture retain their individual properties.
Homogenous mixture
Components of the mixture are in the same phase e.g. air is a gaseous homogenous mixture.
Heterogenous mixture: two-phase system; single state two-phase system
Components of the mixture are in different phases.
Two-phase system: e.g. a solid and a liquid
Single state two-phase system: e.g. two immiscible liquids (oil and water)
Solid state -> Gaseous state
Sublimation
Gaseous state -> solid state
