Ch 66 - Dentistry for the Surgeon Flashcards
What is the maximal normal gingival sulcus depth in cats and dogs?
- Cats: No deeper than 0.5mm
- Dogs: No deeper than 3mm
What is the dental formula of cats and dogs?
What is the system of naming teeth called?
Modified Triadan System
Which jaw contains three-rooted teeth?
The maxilla
What local anaesthetics can be used for nerve blocks?
How long does each last?
What is the maximum dose?
Bupivicaine 0.5%
- Lasts 6-10hr
- Maximum 2mg/kg in dog and cat
Mepivicaine 2%
- Lasts 4hr
- Maximum dose ?
Lidocaine 2%
- Lasts less than 2hr
- Maximum dose 5mg/kg in dogs, 1mg/kg in cats
Adding buprenorphine or dexmedetomidine may prolong effects for up to or beyond 24hr
What nerve blocks can be used in the oral cavity?
- Maxillary nerve block
- Infraorbital nerve block
- Major palatine nerve block
- Inferior alveolar nerve block
- Middle mental nerve block
How does an open extraction differ from a closed extraction?
For an open extraction a mucoperiosteal flap is elevated to allow removal of alveolar bone
What are the 2 main options for mandibulomaxillary fixation?
What are some general recommendations?
- Tape/leather/plastic muzzle
- Bis-acryl composite bridges (most commonly from mandibular to maxillary canines)
Should be snug enough to maintain dental interlock for stability but loose enough (gap of 0.5-1cm in cats, 1-1.5cm in dogs) to allow lapping up water and semi-liquid food
What are the two most common forms of interdental wiring?
- Stout multiple loop technique
- Risdon wiring technique
At least 2 teeth per fragment should be included
Can place wire subgingivally to prevent slippage
MUST be combined with composite splint (placed lingually on mandibular teeth, bucally on maxillary teeth)
