process of weighing the perceived pros and cons or costs and benefits
Preparation
decision to change is made
- this time is used to make a plan, obtain any tools they might need, learn new skills, acquire resources

implementing the plan or putting the plan into action to change the behavior
maintenence
work to prevent relapsing to old behavior
