Direct Institution Approach
- a teacher centered apporach
- the best and easiest way for teachers, doesnt mean for students
- teacher is center of class
- students need ot master their academic skills
- higher expectations here
Constructionists Approach
- learner(student) centered appraoch
- students take on more active role in their learning
- construct their own knowledge and critically think, and reflect
Which approach is best for student’s learning experience
- best to combine the two Direct and Constructivst
- some cases may require one approach over the other
NCLB Legislation
- no child left behind
- skools and districts held accountable for success and failrure of students
- FSAs, Literacy, Numeracy assessments used to see how gud skool system is
Critisims of Performance Tests
- teachers teach too much of the test itself
- may not ven be linked with students achieveing higher standards
- single scores doesnt provide info on what the students shud improve on
School Goal Orientation: Mastery
- stress effort and improvement
- focuses on mastering skills and better learning
- more cooperative opportunities
School Goal Orientation: Performance
- single out high achievers
- more competition for beter grades in skools
- the outcome = ur overal abilities
- bad for students exper cuz no focus was on peer life
School and Class Size and Student Experience
- larger high schools = better for variety
- smaller classrooms can be more engaging and personal - students may participate more
- smaller HS hav less noise and disruptive behaviour
- no link w better grades and smaller schools
Performance Avoidant : Student
doesnt want to think about failures and can create harmful strategieis`
Obstacles for Student Achievement
- procrastination = poor time management, cannot concentrate
- Anxiety
- protecting self worth by avoiding failure = no trying at all or procrastination
- self -handicapping = pre much setting themsevles up for failrure
Helping Adolescents with Achievements
- help set challenging but realistic goals
- increase a positive belief in themselves and self-worth
- teach good methods to decrease anxiety
- help them identify their procrastination
- help them identify goals and values
- help build behavioural strats (reward systems)
- help build cog strats (dealing with failures)
Things that Matter in the Classroom
- teachers should beleive in themsevles
- teachers shud believe in their students
- teachers shud build trust and concern for students
Attribution Thoery
once ppl hav done smth, they evaluate the outcome and try to understand why outcome happened
- Locus of Causality = was it internal, my ability? or external, the task difficulty
- Casual Stability = whether cause shud b changed, needs more effort? or stay same, relying on luck
