acute pain
pain of a sort duration that has been identifiable cause such as trauma, surgery, or injury
chronic pain
pain that lasts beyond the normal healing period of 3-6 months
neuropathic pain
pain that results from damage to the nerve in the peripheral or central nervous system

causes of an urgent assessment:
- chest pain must be treated immediately because it may be a myocardial infarction ( heart attack ) that progresses with each minute
- headache, especially the “ worst headache of my life “ is an emergency, because it may be a symptom of a cerebral hemorrhage requiring emergency surgery
pain
an unpleasant sensory & emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage ( whatever the patient says it is )
lifespan considerations
- prevalent in older adults
- not a normal consequence of aging
- difficult to distinguish onset of acute pain when chronic pain exists
- older adults may experience more adverse side effects of analegsia
- challenge to accurately assess pain in populations with cognitive impairments
cultural considerations
- differences in expectations for adequate pain treatment throughout various cultures
- gender differences in pain
- sociocultural variables influence pain
opioid
respiratory depression; specific drug

carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, & minerals
low levels of vitamin D includes:
- falls & fractures
- cardiovascular disease
- autoimmune disease
- infectious disease
- type I & type II diabetes
