Ch. 6 Meteorology for Pilots - A - Basic Weather Theory Flashcards
what is the troposphere?
The layer of the atmosphere extending from earth’s surface to an avg. altitude of 36,000ft.
What is the tropopause?
It is a level, not a layer which acts like a lid to confine most of the water vapor and associated weather to the troposphere.
What is the stratosphere?
It is a layer of the atmosphere. It has a similar composition to the troposphere except less water vapor.
it extends to approximately 160,000 ft.
What are the two layers of the atmosphere above the stratosphere?
The Mesosphere and Thermosphere. They have little practical influence over weather.
Does the height of the Troposphere change?
Yes, the height of the troposphere and tropopause are lower near the poles, and in winter. Higher near the equator and in the summer.
If you captured a cubic foot of the atmosphere, what gases would you find and at what proportions?
Nitrogen (78%) ; Oxygen (21%) ; Argon, carbon dioxide, and other gasses makeup (1%)
Water vapor would range from 0-4%
To what altitude above ground do gasses exist in fairly uniform proportions?
Up to approximately 260,000ft.
