Ch. 6: Adaptations & Survival Flashcards
Why do some animals form groups to survive in their environment?
To protect each other, keep warm, share food, raise young, capture prey, and share work.
What causes some animals to migrate?
Little food is available. The animals move to warmer places where more food is available.
Living things depend on the environment to…
give them things they need to survive.
Plants and animals are affected when…
the environment changes.
Some changes are fast such as…
when a wildfire kills plants.
Other changes are slow and take many years to happen. For example:
Changes in climate overtime can cause glaciers to melt and increase sea levels.
How do animals respond to seasonal changes?
Animals will migrate, hibernate and/or molt.
To move to another location
Migration
To go into a deep sleep during the winter months
Hibernation
To shed and then regrow body covering
Molt
How do animals respond to changes in environmental conditions?
Some animals move in and out of changing environments. The animal may move to a similar environment where resources are available.
Something that helps
(Example: animals making groups and helping each other.)
Advantage
To go into a deep sleep during the winter months
Hibernate
A state where a living thing slows its natural activity to survive the winter
Dormant
A strong effect
