The American System:
Wanted to make the Us self sufficient economically
States rights
States had a right to nullify any law that a state thought was unconstitutional; document can’t favor 1 section over another
Foreign policy
US supports independence with foreign countries but they wouldn’t get involved with their problems. If they became involved, they might get drawn into conflicts.
Monroe Doctrine
European power shouldn’t interfere with Us’, no foreign colonization, US won’t interfere with Europe, colonies already there-left alone
Andrew Jackson
Famous for Battle Of New Orleans. His campaigners described him as a war hero. Small farmers, frontier settlers, slave holders supported him.
Political parties
US had a Era of good feelings; Federalist Party broke up, democratic republicans split. Whig: Henry Clan Democrats split over issue of slave/expansion, republicans didn’t allow slave to spread
Trail of Tears
800 mile forced march made by the Cherokee Indians
Native American Treaties
Treaty of Greenville: Native Americans won’t be moved w/o permission
Sectionalism
Favoring 1 section/region over another, rather than to a region/nation as a whole
Transportation revolution
A period of rapid growth in the speed and convenience of travel because of new methods of transportation.
