Monitored live-voice (MLV)
When an audiologist uses his/her own voice to administer a hearing test.
Monaural and Binaural

Speech detection threshold (SDT)
The lowest level at which a subject can barely detect the presence of speech and the identification of speech.
Speech recognition threshold (SRT)
The lowest hearing level at which speech can be understood.
Cold running speech
Rapid and monotonous speech that is spoken at about the same frequency throughout the phrases.
Spondaic words
A spondee is a word with two syllables, both pronounced with equal stress and effort.
Carrier phrase
A phrase that is used repetitively preceding spondaic words in a hearing test.
Most comfortable loudness (MCL)
A test that finds the level of sound that is most comfortable for the listener.
Uncomfortable loudness level (UCL)
Threshold of discomfort (TD)

The level of speech sound that is uncomfortable for the listener.

Phonetically balanced
Lists of words that contain all of the phonetic elements of connected english discourse in their normal proportion to one another.
Consonant-nucleus-consonant words (CNC words)
A word type that is often used as a word list in speech recognition testing that takes the following order: consonant, vowel or dithong, and consonant
California consonant test
A test that is designed to be sensitive to the discrimination problems of patients with high frequency hearing losses.
Picture identification task
A test developed to test the word recognition of adults who could not produce verbal responses and had difficulty in arranging into sets of four rhyming words.
