Ch. 5 Sec. 6&7 Flashcards
What is the angle of incidence?
The angle formed between the incident ray and the normal
What is the reflected Ray?
The Ray of light that reflects off of a surface
What is the angle of reflection?
The angle formed between a reflected Ray and the normal.
What is the normal?
Line that is perpendicular to the mirror
What is the law of reflection?
A law of mirrors that states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
What are mirrors used for?
Personal grooming, automobiles, telescopes, cameras, CD players and much more
Do most objects reflect the light like mirrors?
No
How does light reflect off of your nose?
It reflects in all directions
What is diffuse reflection?
When light strikes an ordinary abject such as a book, the light is reflected in all directions
What is image?
Where the extended lines cross
What is virtual image?
With a flat mirror, the image appears to be behind the mirror.
What is real image?
Where light rays actually converge with a concave mirror and lenses.
What are rear surface mirrors?
Reflective coating on the rear of the mirror.
What must light pass through?
The glass twice and gets refracted at each change of medium
What is the net effect?
The light acts as if it had been reflected from a surface located approximately in the middle of the mirror
When does the size of the shift increase?
When the angle of incidence increases
What is the result of the size of the shift increasing?
The result is slightly blurred
What happens with transverse waves?
They are perpendicular to the direction of the wave
Does light need a medium to travel in?
No, it can travel in a vacuum
What is carry energy?
Electromagnetic energy
What is a concave mirror?
A curved mirror in which the reflecting surface cave in
What is a convex mirror?
A curved mirror in which the reflecting surface bulges out
What is the shape of a concave mirror?
)
What is the shape of a convex mirror?
(
What is a real image?
An image that can be projected on a screen or on the film of a camera
What is the incident ray?
The Ray of light that strikes a surface
