Ch 5 L1 Floods Flashcards
Global Disasters
-very bad accident
-negative impact on environment and people.
Examples of global disasters:
-Floods
-Hunger
-Tsunamis
-Poverty
What are floods?
Overflowing of water onto dry land, due mostly to heavy rainfall
Positive effect of floods
𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐭 on agricultural land. (floodwaters carry nutrients and sediments, which are
deposited on flood plains, enriching the soil.)
𝗙𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
__________ are flooded
deliberately to
take advantage
of this natural
fertilization
process.
Rice paddies
Negative Effects of Floods
-costly natural disasters
-loss of lives/property
-destructions of crops
-deterioration of health
Natural Floods caused by…
overflow of
water from rivers, lakes, oceans,
hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis, or
heavy rain.
Types of Floods
1- Natural Floods
2 - Catastrophic Floods
Coastal Flooding are caused by …. and they can result in
caused by: ocean water to overflow.
result in: flooding on the shores occurs.
Flash Floods
-Natural Flood
-A sudden local flood,
typically due to heavy
rain.
Natural Floods cause by
Volcanoes, landslides, or earthquakes
generate long, high sea waves called
Tsunamis
Catastrophic Floods
Caused by major unexpected events such as dam breakages.
Example of Catastrophic Flood
Shakidor Dam breakage in 2005 in Pakistan after one-week of heavy rainfalls.
Why are tsunamis super destructive?
because of the wind; wind flows in circles normally but with tsunamis, they flow straight.
