Ch. 5 Key Terms Flashcards
Asystole
A condition in which no rhythm or electrical current is traveling through a cardiac conduction system
Bradycardia
A slow heart rate; less than 60 bpm
Cardiac output
The volume of blood the heart pumps each minute
Complexes
Atrial or ventricular depolarizations as they appear on the ECG; complete ECG waveforms
Diaphoresis
Excessive, abnormal sweating in relation to environment and activity level; tends to affect the entire body
Hypotension
Lower than normal blood pressure that can cause a reduction of blood flow to vital organs
Intervals
The period of time between two activities within the heart
Ischemia
Sudden loss/reduction in blood supply (oxygen) to a region of the heart tissue due to atherosclerotic plaque, blood clot, emboli, or vascular spasm (Prinzmetal angina)
J Point
Point on the QRS complex where depolarization is completed, and repolarization starts; where the S wave and ST segment meet
Morphology
Overall form and structure (shape)
Mottled skin aka Levido Reticularis
Skin with patchy and irregular colors and associated with low cardiac output; can be marbled with different colors or with red and purple marks, streaks, or spots
Pallor
Pale skin
Palpitations
Fast heartbeat sensation felt by the patient, which may or may not be associated with complaints of chest pain
Segments
A portion or part of the ECG
Stroke volume
The volume of blood ejected by one or both ventricles with each contraction
