something that continually happens to the child which is delivered by the caregiver(s)
Basic Evil
a feeling that arises in the kid who has experienced the basic evil; aggression towards the caregiver(s) which is immediately repressed
Basic Hostility
taking that repressed hostility and generalizing it to everyone else in the world
Basic Anxiety
the self that you were born with; intrinsic potentialities
Real Self
objectively existing person, perceived by others
Actual Self
a neurotic construction to replace the real self with a wishful, perfect self
Idealized Self
compliance, self-effacement, sucking up to people
Moving Toward Others
aggression, expansion, everything is a fight/competition
Moving Against Others
resignation, detachment, withdrawal
Moving Away from Others
person fills as few life tasks as possible to be left alone
Persistent Resignation
person doesn’t care about your world, rebels against the structures of polite interaction
Rebelliousness
person finds life worthless, extreme apathy
Shallow Living
similar to Freud’s projection
Externalization
an inability of neurotics to see their own flaws
Blind Spots
a defense mechanism in which thoughts and feelings that seem to conflict or to be incompatible are isolated from each other in separate and apparently impermeable psychic compartments
Compartmentalization
meeting of such physiological needs as those for water, food, and sleep required for a child’s biological survival
Need for Satisfaction
child’s need for security and freedom from fear
Need for Safety
person who uses moving toward people as the major means of reducing basic anxiety
Compliant Type
person who uses moving against people as the major means of reducing basic anxiety
Hostile Type
person who uses moving away from people as the major means of reducing basic anxiety
Detached Type
process of self-help that Horney believed people could apply to themselves to solve life’s problems and to minimize conflict
Self-Analysis
coming up with an incorrect excuse
Rationalization
checking all spontaneity because they are afraid of a trait ‘coming out’
Excessive Self-Control
this is the way things are and the only way they will be
Arbitrary Rightness
never take a stand on anything
Elusiveness
no amount of data will convince you
