Ch. 5 - DNA, Genes & Biotech Flashcards
What is transfer RNA?
Molecules that translate the mRNA code, and link specific bases on mRNA with specific amino acids that will be useful to build proteins.
What is a phenotype?
The physical manifestation of the instructions or the “outcome”.
How do genes work?
Genotypes and phenotypes
What is the treatment of diabetes?
Bacteria to produce human insulin.
What are some benefits of genetically modified things?
1) Preventing diseases. 2) Curing diseases. 3) Treating diseases.
What is a Genotype?
All of the genes contained in an organism. The actual genetic sequence “instructions”.
What are the 6 fears customers have with GMO?
1) Organisms we want to kill may become invincible.
2) Organisms we don’t want to kill may die.
3) Genetically modified crops are not tested or regulated adequately.
4) Eating genetically modified food is dangerous.
5) Loss of genetic diversity among crop plants is risky.
6) Hidden costs may reduce the financial advantages of genetically modified crops.
