Ch. 5 - Aerodrome Procedures Flashcards

1
Q

Air Traffic Control

A

Busy aerodromes ATC provide an Aerodrome Control Service, for the provision of clearances, instructions and information in order to prevent collisions and to achieve runway and wake turbulence separation

Q

Tower frequencies

A

As a rule, the first frequency is the primary and the second is the secondary frequency (for use if the primary, fails). The secondary frequency can also be used by aircraft not equipped with the primary frequency.

Q

ATIS

A

Most controlled aerodromes have an Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) that broadcasts recorded aeronautical information on an appropriate radio frequency and is amended when aspects of recorded conditions change.

Q

Items in an ATIS broadcast

A
  • (name of aerodrome) Terminal Information
  • Code letter of the transmission
  • What to expect (type of approach)
  • Runway (in use)
  • Surface conditions
  • Any other operational information
  • Surface wind
  • Visibility
  • Present weather
  • Cloud
  • Temperature and dew point
  • QNH
  • 2,000 ft wind
  • “ON FIRST CONTACT WITH …… TOWER/APPROACH CONTROL NOTIFY RECEIPT OF INFORMATION …… “

Q

Controlled aerodromes - ready for takeoff

A

Pilot advises tower they are ready “TAW READY”. Tower can respond in one of three ways

  • Tower instructs you to hold “TAW HOLD POSITION”. you respond with “HOLDING TAW”
  • Tower allows you to take off “TAW CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY 34” you respond with “CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY 34 TAW”
  • Tower allows you to move onto the runway but not take off yet “TAW LINE UP RUNWAY 34” you respond with “LINING UP RUNWAY 34 TAW”

10
Q

Joining the circuit at controlled aerodromes

A
  • Is reliant of visual methods so position reports must be accurate
  • Listen to ATIS and advise tower that you have received it (if there is no ATIS tower will pass you the necessary info)
  • Advise POB if not returning from a local flight
  • Join circuit as instructed by the tower (usually left hand for a right-hand circuit)

16
Q

Go-around

A

Advert from unsafe situation, climb back to circuit height and continue good lookout

17
Q

Sequencing circuit traffic

A

You may be advised to orbit, make a short approach or extend downwind

18
Q

Surface movement control

A

GROUND used to split workload if it is operating it will be stated in ATIS, change to tower when approaching the holding point and change back to ground for taxi instructions

19
Q

ATC off watch

A

Aerodrome becomes unattended, follow unattended procedures, ATIS will inform when ATC is off watch, the airspace around the aerodrome also becomes uncontrolled

20
Q

Cautionary calls

A

Respond with callsign to calls about wins sheer and wake turbulence

21
Q

AFIS

A

Is provided by flight service station established in a tower located at the aerodrome, the purpose is to give advice and info useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights

22
Q

Flight service aerodromes

A

Uncontrolled attended aerodromes

23
Q

What are AFIS aerodromes commonly referred to

A

Flight service aerodromes

24
Q

Does AFIS issue clearances

A

No

25
Q

Flight service aerodrome - taxiing for takeoff

A

Call flight service and advise that you are taxiing, state location of aircraft, intentions, POB and that you have received ATIS (if no ATIS flight service will give you needed info)

26
Q

Flight service aerodrome - ready for take-off

A

Advise flight service and they will pass you traffic info if sighting traffic it is your decision whether to wait or to takeoff

27
Q

Flight service aerodrome - Joining/operating in the circuit

A

Don’t need clearance as no control zones, call flight service 10nm from aerodrome advising your position, alt, intentions and POB, listen to ATIS and advise you have received it, make downwind and other circuit calls as the situation requires

28
Q

Flight service aerodrome - after landing

A

Advise intentions for taxiing to parking area

29
Q

Flight service off watch

A

Becomes unattended, unattended aerodrome procedures apply

30
Q

Unattended aerodromes

A

Don’t have ATC or flight service in attendance, calls prefixed with …TRAFFIC, similar calls to flight service however no response
