Ch. 5 Flashcards
Rutherford’s Atomic Model
After discovering nucleus, he used existing ideas about atom and proposed an atomic model in which electrons
What did his model explain as well as not explain
Explained a few simple properties of atoms, could not explain the chemical properties of elements
The Bohr Model-1913- student of Rutherford
He proposed that electrons are found only in specific paths, or orbits, around the sun.
Energy levels
Fixed distances from the nucleus where an electron can have energy.
Quantum of energy
Amount of energy required to move an electron from one energy level to another.
Quantum mechanical model
Modern description of how electrons in atoms in atoms came from mathematical solutions to the schrödinger equation. Determines allowed occupied energy levels and probability of what energy level they are found in
Atomic Orbital
Mathematical expression that describes probability of finding an electron at various locations around the nucleus.
