What are the 2 types of Circadian Rhythms?
Ultradian and Infradian Rhythms
Utradian is more than once a day (heartbeat)
Infrdian is exceeding 24 hour cycle (mesntrual cycle)
What acts as our biological clock?
Suprachiasmatic Nuclues
It is called a “non-rapid eye movement” or quiet sleep. Involves little body movement.
NREM SLEEP or Non REM
This is where dreams occurs.
REM Sleep
Paralysis of large muscles,fast and irregular heart rate
what are the functions of REM sleep?
It is necessary for maturation of brain in infants, it aids information processing, learning and memory consolidation.
What are the major sleep disorders?
Sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and insomia
This sleep disorder is considerd incurable, it involves excessive daytime sleepiness and uncontrollable attack on REM sleep.
Narcolepsy
caused to stop breathing during sleeps and individuals must be awaken briefly ot breathe
Sleep apnae
this sleep disorder causes difficult sleeping or staying asleep
Insomnia
Alter normal mental functioning, mood, perception and thought. Controlled by substance used medically
Psychoactive Drugs
Categories of Drugs
Stimulants, hallucinogens and depressants
Examples of Stimulants
suppress appetite, feel more awake, alert and energetic
Caffeine, Nicotine, Amphetamines, and cocaine
Caffeine and nicotine are legal drug, amphetamines is controlled while cocaine is illegal
Types of Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens (psychedelics), hallucinations, LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), Ecstasy, and Marijuana
Types of depressants
Alcohol, Barbiturates, Narcotics
