Ch 4: Redox Reactions Flashcards
conjugate redox pair
an oxidising agent and its corresponding reducing agent e.g Cu2+/Cu
oxidant/oxidising agent
a chemical series which accepts one or more electrons in redox reaction. an oxidant causes another substance to be oxidised, and in the process the oxidant is reduced.
oxidation
- a reaction in which oxygen is a reactant. the addition of oxygen to find oxides, such as combustion reactions.
- process by which a chemical series loses electrons. electrons on right of equation. an increase in elements oxidation number during the reaction
oxidation number
a number assigned to an atom in a compound or as a free element, which represents the charge that the atom would have if it was an ion. oxidation rules are used to determine oxidation numbers. used to identify a redox reaction.
oxidised
the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation number. electrons written on right of equation.
redox reaction
electron transfers from the reducing agent to the oxidising agent. the oxidation number of one reactant will increase and the other oxidation number of the reactant will decrease
reduced
gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation number. when a substance is reduced, electrons are on the left of the equation
reducing agent
a reaction which causes a reactant to gain electrons or for its oxidation number to decrease. itself is oxidised and loses electrons for its oxidation number to increase
reductant/reducing agent
a reactant which causes another reactant to be reduced, it iself is oxidised.
reduction
the process whereby a species gains electrons or decreases in oxidation number. electrons on left of arrow.
