Ch 3: Stoichiometry and the Combustion of Fuels Flashcards
bar
a unit of pressure. 1 bar = 100kPa
gas constant
the constant, R, in the universal gas equation PV=nrt. R= 8.31J/K/mol where pressure is measured in kPa, volume in L, temp in K
ideal gas
a gas which obeys the universal gas equation at all temps and pressures
kelvin scale
absolute temp scale. deg K= deg C + 273
pascal
unit of pressure equal to 1 newton per square metre where pressure= force/area
pressure
the force exerted per unit area of a surface
standard atmosphere
one standard atmosphere (1 atm) is the pressure required to support 760 mm of mercury (760 mm Hg) in a mercury barometer at 25 degrees C. 1 atm is approx the pressure experienced at sea level
standard conditons
standard reference conditions to compare testing of experimental activities. gas pressure is 100kPa (1 bar), temp is 25 deg C (298 K) and conc of any dissolved species is 0.1 M.
standard lab conditions (SLC)
conditions at which gas pressure is 100kPa (1 bar), temp is 25 deg C (298 K). one mole of an ideal gas at SLC has a volume of 24.8 L
standard temperature and pressure (STP)
conditions at which gas pressure is 100 kPa, temp is 25 deg C, one mole of an ideal gas at SLC has a volume of 22.7 L
universal gas equation
PV=nRT which is the equation which describes the behavior of an ideal gas
