CH. 4 - Positioning Apparatus Flashcards
What is the primary function of a fire pumper? P136
A fire department pumper’s primary function on the fireground is to provide water directly for fire streams or to support other pumpers or aerial apparatus
What is size up? P136
It is an ongoing evaluation of influential factors at the scene of an incident. It determines the most advantageous position for the attack pumper.
What are some circumstances that prohibit standard apparatus placement? P137
Rescue situations. Exposures. Water supply. Method of attack. Hose line deployment. Wind direction. Terrain. Roadway response. Structural collapse. Preincident planning. Overhead utility lines. Falling debris.
What is the determination of a collapse zone? P138
Apparatus and personality should maintain a collabse zone of at least one and a half times the height of any building determined likely to collapse.
The corners of a building may be advantageous positions for apparatus placement especially aerial apparatus operating master streams.
Blocking access for aerial apparatus can seriously jeopardize the outcome of an incident. P140
Many jurisdiction guidelines require that pumpers yield an optimum position close to a building for aerial apparatus. P140
What is the inside/outside method of apparatus placement? P140
If a building is less than five floors tall, the attack pumper is positioned on the side of the street closest to the building and the Aerial Apparatus are placed outboard of the pumper.
If the fire building is greater than five floors, the attack pumper is placed in the outside position to allow the aerial apparetus maximum reach to the building must take into consideration the stabilizer system
What are examples of a static water supply? P141
Supply water and rest that does not provide a pressure head for fire suppression. Water in a reservoir, pond, storage tank, dry hydrant, or lake
What is a dry hydrant? P142
A permanently installed pipe that has pumper suction connections installed at static water sources to speed drafting operations
