Ch 4 - Hebrew Nouns Flashcards
First rule of Shewa
When two side-by-side Shewas occur at the beginning of a sentence, the first Vocal Shewa becomes Hireq and the second Vocal Shewa becomes silent.
Second rule of Shewa
A Vocal Shewa cannot precede a guttural with a reduced vowel. The Vocal Shewa takes the correspond short vowel of the reduced vowel.
Compensatory lengthening
Because the initial gutturals ר, ע, א reject the Daghesh Forte, the Pathach vowel of the definite article lengthens to a Qamets.
Virtual doubling
When the first consonant is a ה or ח, the rejection of the Daghesh Forte results in virtual doubling. Virtual doubling is the rejection of the Daghesh Forte without the lengthening of the Pathach vowel.
Bump rule
The conjunction ְו is spelled with a Shureq before the consonants מ, ב, פ
