  2. After San Diego he continued north and sailed to Santa Catalina Island and met with a great number of Indians dancing.
  3. Going further north they traveled on the islands of San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa outside the Santa Barbara Channel and the Indians brought them sardines.
    In Cabrillo the Indians rowed out in canoes to greet them.

A

Hernan Cortes left Spain in 1504 to find gold. Cortes sailed to the land of Tenochtitlan in 1519 and conquered the Aztec empire. The land of the Aztec and other lands along Baja California captured by the Spanish became the Spanish colony of New Spain.

A

Drake found Drake’s Bay on the Point Reyes Peninsula on June 17, 1579. He named it Nova Albion , which means New England. He found this bay because he had to make repairs to his ship. The ship was loaded with 30 tons of stolen treasure that he took from the Spanish. During his stay he met the Miwok Indians where he traded and claimed the land for England.
