Ch. 4 abortion Flashcards
What is the moral problem of abortions
Is abortion, at any time during pregnancy, morally acceptable?
What are the views of the conservative torwards abortion ?
Abortion is permissible only when pregnancy threatens a woman’s health
What are the views of the liberal on abortion?
Someone who maintains that a woman is justified and having an abortion because she doesn’t want to get pregnant
What are the views of the moderates on abortion?
Abortion is permissible if woman has a good reason
What is a classic liberal on the abortion issue?
Someone who believes that there is a cutoff point after which abortion is wrong
Supporting arguments for liberals
Moral status argument
Woman’s right argument
Moral status argument
Liberal view where the Fetus does not have a moral status, thus is not a loving being. It is like removing an appendix.
Woman’s right argument
Liberal view where there is a possibility that the fetus is a person, but the woman’s right to her own body overpowers the fetus’ right to life
Religious argument
Conservative viewpoint against abortion stating that if the bible condemns a certain practice, then the practice is wrong. The bible condemns abortion. Therefor, abortion is wrong.
Argument for innocence
Conservative argument that says the Basic idea that abortion is wrong because it is wrong to kill an innocent human being.
Counter argument for argument for innocence
If the pregnancy inhibits the woman’s health. Her life will then outweigh the fetus’.
The genetic defense
Defense for the conservative view That one cell of a possible baby has human genetic codes and thus, the baby’s life begins at conception
Counter argument for the genetic defense
Every cell in your body has a genetic code, your cells are not human beings.
The potentiality defense
Support for the conservative viewpoint stating that the one cell from conception has potential to become a human being.
Counter argument to potentiality defense
It has the potential to become a human, but it may not. Just like a coconut becoming a coconut tree. It may or may not happen.
The continuity defense
Conservative viewpoint stating that no one knows when a fetus becomes a human being, thus, why not when human life begins, which according to a conservative, is a conception
Counter argument for the continuity defense
Liberals have a different viewpoint of when life begins. Who’s to say that the conservatives are right about conception.
Counter argument for thinking a fetus has life when a fetus has a recognizable human form
A deformed human being due to disease will not gain human form, thus, are they not alive?
Do mannequins, with human form, have life?
Counter argument for thinking a fetus has life when it has a heartbeat
What makes a heartbeat more important than other necessary organs like the brain or the kidney?
Counter argument for thinking a fetus has life when it has the capacity to survive outside of the womb
Just because another being is fully dependent on you, does not mean they do not have life. A patient in need of care relying on a surgeon to live is not considered not living just because it is dependent on the surgeon.
Counter argument for thinking a fetus has life at birth
Why should a change of location mark the difference? A premature baby is not more alive than a fully developed baby in a womb.
The potentiality argument
A fetus has the potential to become a human being. Thus, you cannot take away the idea that it will be a human being. Abortion takes away that right. As do contraceptives.
Wrongness of killing argument
The loss of ones life is what makes killing so bad. Abortion takes away the fetus’ life.
Counter argument for the wrongness of killing
If a fetus cannot have values, it cannot value the rest of its life, in which case, an abortion cannot be wrong
Who is a famous conservative
Don Marquis
