  • This was partly because it spent so much on weapons to keep pace with USA ( none was low invested into economy and there was little industrial development )

  • There should be more openness in government / less corrupt
  • The Brezhnev Doctrine would be dropped

  • The end of the Pact made many countries independent of USSr and allowed them to govern themselves
  • they no longer had to follow policies by Moscow
  • They didn’t have to run their economy for USSR benefit
  • The all abolished communism

A
  • He lost control of satellite states so communists blamed him fro losing control of eastern Europe and threatening USSR security
  • A coup was staged against him in 1991 that severely undermined his authority
  • No longer ablate manage in these conditions resigned
